About the tool

When you open an account with HSBC, or during a profile review, you may need to provide evidence of your identity and address.

HSBC Identify is a tool you can use to quickly and conveniently submit the required documents.

You will use your mobile device or webcam to take photos of your documentation and a photo of your face. For your proof of address, you can also upload a document directly from your files. We will then verify the information you have submitted and respond to you within two business days via email.

You will require an acceptable identification document and an acceptable address verification document. Find out more.

Who can use the app

To use this service you must have been provided with a reference number by either a HSBC staff member or as part of our online application. Please do not use this app unless you have been instructed to do so by HSBC.

Getting started

Retrieve your HSBC reference number

Your reference number should have been provided as a part of an online application or through a HSBC member of staff.

Download the app

Follow the link in your application to visit the App Store or Google Play app marketplaces to download the HSBC Identify app. Please note, the app is not currently available for BlackBerry and Windows Phone devices.

If you are applying for a business account, you can also complete Online Identification using your web enabled computer, provided that it has got a webcam attached.


What devices are supported on the HSBC Identify tool?

The HSBC Identify mobile app can be downloaded only through the App Store and GooglePlay Store. The browser version of the app can be used directly from your smartphone or your computer, provided you have a webcam installed.

Is there a charge to use HSBC Identify?

No, HSBC does not charge for this service. However, you may be charged by your mobile network provider if you use mobile data to access the app - please check your payment plan for more details.

Can I use HSBC Identify abroad?

The HSBC Identify app is only available on the UK App Store and GooglePlay Store for download. Once downloaded, the app can be used abroad. The desktop version of HSBC Identify can be used abroad, but when using the tool abroad please be aware that you will be responsible for complying with laws in the countries you travel to. Your network provider's charges may be higher than usual when abroad and HSBC is not responsible for these charges. We recommend that you check your roaming coverage and charges prior to travel.

What if I do not have a mobile device?

You can use the desktop version of HSBC Identify using your computer and a webcam. The other solution is to present your documents in branch.

What type of mobile device can I use?

The HSBC Identify app can be downloaded for compatible iPhone®, iPad® and Android® devices.

Will this app work on my tablet?

The HSBC Identify app can be used on compatible iPad® and Android® tablets. However, it is not fully optimised for all devices. The desktop version of HSBC Identify will work on a tablet device.

Using the app

What information will I need?

You will need to type in your HSBC reference, which you should have been provided as a part of an online application or by a HSBC member of staff. You will also need to enter your email address. You will be asked to take two pictures using your mobile device camera or a webcam:

  1. ID verification document (e.g. a passport)
  2. A photo of your face

You will then be asked to either take a picture of or upload your proof of address (e.g. a utility bill).

How do I know the documents have been received?

Once you have submitted all documents successfully, you will receive an on-screen confirmation.

How long do I have to complete the process?

There is no maximum time to complete the process, however please note that HSBC applications have an expiry date of 28 days, and if this is not completed within this timeframe you will need to restart your application.

Can another applicant use my mobile device to submit their documents?

Each applicant needs to complete their own application and submit their own documents when prompted, as a photo of their face will need to be taken during the process.

What happens once I submit all documents?

Your documents will be reviewed by the bank and you will be notified of the outcome via email. If you need to submit additional documents, you will be able to do so using HSBC Identify.

What is the minimum compatible version to use the HSBC Identify mobile application?

HSBC Identify is compatible with:

  • iPhone®, iPad® and iPod Touch® using iOS 8.0 and above
  • Android® devices using 4.1 or above
